about

"Heat Death (Hold Me Here)" is a pop song inspired by the inevitable heat death of the universe.

Leaving the house in the winter, you feel like an astronaut suited up for outer space. No inch of skin can be left uncovered. One winter I learned that cold is only the absence of heat-- that heat always moves to fill in space. Sticking my hands into the empty insides of pockets and bags, I’d feel the heat rushing off of my body to fill the void.

It’s easy in Minneapolis winters to imagine moving to warmer places. Written in the deepest darkest cold of January, “Heat Death (Hold Me Here)” grapples with the end of the universe as a tool to return to the details of my life, and to remember the things that hold me here.

lyrics

lyrics:

cold is the ultimate absence-
shockingly measurable
though at some point, all you feel is void
cold air sticks on the insides of pockets & bags

& the inevitable heat death of the universe
plays on as a backdrop
to our lives
beyond that final exhale of expansion
you can find me
dreaming of the other side

hold me
here, like you would hold a ladder-
casually you steady it against the fall
hold me here,
like you would hold a hammer
tightly with a tenderness as you aim for the wall

still I am still
it’s the world that is moving

can you hold me here/ will you hold me here?

while the inevitable heat death of the universe
plays on in the backgrounds
of our lives
beyond that final exhale of expansion
you can find me
dreaming of the other side

pull me in
with a well-woven story
one by one, my limbs unfold across the pages
lost I am lost
in the streets & the simplest things

when you pull me in
can you hold me here / will you hold me here?

while the inevitable heat death of the universe
plays on in the backgrounds
of our lives
beyond that final exhale of expansion
you can find me
dreaming of the other side

can you hold me here / will you hold me here?
